Perfection vs Precision

Often times, when individuals begin their health, fitness and nutrition journey, they shoot for perfection. They try to be perfect with their workouts. They try to be perfect with their nutrition. While this effort and strive for perfection is extremely admirable, this lofty goal of perfection can also be what easily derails individuals on their journey. Let's take a look at the definitions of perfection and precision.

 

Perfection: The highest attainable state or degree of excellence.

 

Precision: The state of being exact. The ability of a measurement to be reproduced consistently.

 

 So, whether our goals revolve around body transformation, improved overall health and fitness and/or improved athletic performance, we want to shoot for precision as opposed to perfection. Let's take a look at 9Round Nutrition. 9Round Nutrition is built off of the principles of science and human physiology and that is what makes it so powerful and so successful. There are three key elements that we want to put into motion with 9Round Nutrition:

1.    Fuel the body right away upon awakening

2.    Fuel the body every 2.5-3.5 hours thereafter, all throughout the day

3.    Fuel the body with the proper balance of carbohydrate-protein-fat at every meal and snack

 

When we approach these three, 9Round Nutrition principles; we are not looking to attack these with perfection. Rather, we are looking to attack these principles with precision. When we do so, these three key elements will become consistent and repeatable in our everyday lives. Let's say that an individual has set some very aggressive body transformation goals. And as a result, they are trying to be perfect at every meal and snack. But when a meal/snack comes unhinged and they find themselves making unhealthy choices, often times, this can send them into a downward spiral, why? It's because they were shooting for perfection. And when perfection did not happen, this easily becomes perceived as a negative and a failure. And this is exactly why focusing on precision is going to help assist in bringing even more success. Using the same example above, when the goal is precision (and not perfection); we just simply pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, move on to the next meal and snack and bring the precision back into the mix.

 

The same holds true when it comes to our workouts. Let's say an individual sets a very aggressive goal of working out, seven days per week. A great goal for sure. They are shooting for perfection and, in their mind, it's either seven days per week of working out or bust. And as a result, when "life happens", and a workout gets missed, this can send the individual into a downward spiral because their lofty goal of perfection has been cracked. How do you handle missed workouts? But when the goal is precision, consistency and repeatability (and not perfection) we simply move on when we cannot get a workout in, use it as a great day of repair and recovery and we get focused in order to execute our precision on tomorrow's workout.

 

By no means does focusing on precision (and not perfection) mean that you are reducing your goals, not even close. Nor does it mean we become lackadaisical in our approach towards our goals, not even close. Rather, it's all about setting ourselves up for the best success possible and not setting ourselves up for disappointment and frustration (which can happen when perfection is the goal). For an individual to achieve their body transformation goals, it's not about being perfect in their approach. But it is about being precise. Focusing on precision can help assist individuals in achieving new levels of success that they never thought possible. When we focus on precision with the following aspects:

·      Amount of sleep we get each night

·      Fueling the body and hydrating the body right away upon awakening

·      Fueling the body and hydrating the body every 2.5-3.5 hours thereafter, all throughout the day

·      Fueling the body with the proper balance of carbohydrate-protein-fat, at every meal and snack

·      Weekly workout consistency

·      Working out smarter (not harder) by working out in the proper heart rate zones during each workout

 

We are now going to set the body up for the best success possible. As mentioned above, precision comes from consistency and repeatability. When we remain consistent with the aspects above, they then become repeatable each day, each week, each month, etc. And much like compound interest, in time, we start to see a great return on our investment of time. So, let's set ourselves up for the best success possible. Let's put perfection aside and let's put our time, effort, energy and focus towards precision. Enjoy the journey!
