The Best Fuel for Your Workouts

Uyen Trinh

Do you ever find yourself struggling to get the energy you need for a great workout? Most of us are so concerned about how we will fuel our bodies after our workout, we don’t realize how important it is to consume the proper foods beforehand. Eating prior to exercising not only boosts your energy during your workout, but it also prevents low blood sugar (which can lead to lightheadedness and fatigue). Think about it like this, your time in the gym is valuable, and you don’t want to waste a second of it on a bad or ineffective workout. Try eating the following foods the next time you are getting prepared to hit the gym to get the most out of your workouts.

Oats are full of fiber and contain B Vitamins that will help convert the carbs into energy during your workout.

Bananas are filled with lots of potassium and loaded with digestible carbs. Having just one banana prior to your workout will keep your nutrient levels high!

Dark Chocolate Chips
Did I have you at chocolate? When I found out that eating dark chocolate was actually beneficial to my body, I was beyond excited. The antioxidants found in dark chocolate will help prevent muscle soreness. Of course, this doesn't mean you can simply eat chocolate chips and be in amazing shape. One way I like to get my chocolate chips in in a balanced way is with the Kattouf Kookie (available at many 9Round locations or online at http://kattoufstore.com/).

Fruit Smoothie
Not only will a fruit smoothie fuel your body with lots of carbs and high quality protein, but they are also quick to digest and so easy to consume.

Energy Bars
The name pretty much gives it away. Though having an energy bar right before a workout can boost your workout routine, not all bars have the best ingredients for you. Make sure you read the nutrition labels on your bars!

Don’t forget your fluids!
Exercising when you are dehydrated will affect your performance. It is a FACT. Make sure you hydrate your body before your workout. It will make a big difference. With my workout only being 30 minutes long, I typically don’t need to drink water throughout each round. However, I consume lots of water right after my full body workout.

When I began my fitness journey two years ago, I had no knowledge about nutrition until I found 9Round. As a member of 9Round, you will get a nutrition guide included in your membership. The nutrition portal will provide you with an entire list of breakfasts, lunches and dinners created just for you to help reach your fitness goals. Don’t be surprised if you see the foods listed above in your meals! Nutrition is an important part of reaching your fitness goals (no matter what they may be), and having your own guide will give you one less thing to worry about.

Remember that fueling your body properly prior to your workout is just as important as what you consume afterwards. Choosing smart workout foods will leave you feeling energized and not as if you are running on empty.
