Tips & Tricks to Make Your New Year's Fitness Resolutions Stick

Jen Jones

We all know that following a fitness and healthy eating regimen will help us look and feel better, and science backs it up. So, WHY do we find it so hard to start a routine and stick to it? Because we live in a busy, demanding world where almost everything comes before our own health and wellness, are we right? Well, it’s time to make a change. And we don’t mean just writing it down on your list of New Year’s Resolutions (next to, “read more books” and “learn to speak Mandarin”) and never following through. We are talking about making a commitment to carving out time for YOU and sticking with it. If you’ve found it difficult in the past to start, and/or stick with a fitness regimen, here are a few tips that may help…

Be yourself

There are many different fitness activities out there, and many are just fads that everyone wants to join because they are popular. You need to remember it is your fitness routine. It is up to you to choose an activity that you find enjoyable. If your friends like yoga and you tried it and found it was not for you, then choose something else. You should not pick a fitness routine because it is popular or your friends like it. You want to pick one that interests you and gets you excited. It could be yoga, swimming, running or hiking, but whatever it is, you need to go out there and do it consistently to get the best results.

Take responsibility

It is up to you and only you to stick with your fitness routine. You need to take responsibility for your actions. If you are not getting the results you want from your fitness routine, you should not automatically give up on it but find a way to adapt it to achieve the results you want. It is up to you to keep track of how your fitness routine is working and know when you need to switch it up a bit. It is also up to you to decide if you need help in your routine. You can join a gym, hire a personal trainer or enlist the help of family and friends. It can be easier for some of us to stick to our fitness routine if we have the help of others, and it is up to us to know if we are that type of person.

Get going

It is simple to think about starting a fitness routine, but it can be a whole different story for some of us when it is time to start moving. You need to establish a plan and stick to it. You should have a scheduled time to workout and make sure there are no readily available excuses during this time. Many find that keeping an exercise journal can be helpful. You can keep track of how often and how long you workout, and what types of exercises you did and your progress. It may be easier to see what you have achieved and how hard you have worked if you have it on paper. It can be a great tool for helping us take responsibility of our workouts and keep us on the correct path to our fitness success.
