  • 1) variations to every day workout routines 2) the all business, no social talk aspect of the workout routine. Get in, get through the nine rounds, get out. No social chatter. Love it. 3) the expertise, the instruction, the attention, and the professionalism of the individual trainers. I particularly like the sparring aspect with the trainer during the freestyle round. Thanks for the interest. I love Evanston 9Round and I go every weekday when I am in town.

  • What keeps me engaged and coming back after each workout is the varietion of each 30 mins everyday and energy of the environment. I tend to lose interest in the same routine and this shatters that problem. The staff are always supportive and working to make you better no matter your skill or ability. I will add that the training staff is a big part of what makes 9round special. Having a stable consistent group of trainers allows to develop rapport and relationships.

  • There trainers are amazing! Not only are they knowledgeable, but they are super friendly. They can give you that personal training feel by working with you when you need help, or modifying a workout for you, but will also give you your space if your just doing your own thing. I love that they aren't 'class times' either, so you can start a new circuit a few minutes after walking into the door. Workouts are always new and I don't feel like I am constantly doing the same thing every time I go. All in all 9Round has been the perfect workout for me. I feel more engaged when I'm working out there rather then at your typical gym setting.

  • incredibly hard workout. Only 30 minutes. Very fun punching and kicking the pads that the trainer holds. Can go at any time. Sam is a great trainer--very nice!

  • I love the flexible start times, the helpful trainers, and the friendly environment. I love how the workouts change every day. I like that they encourage you to go hard, but absolutely shift if you need an adjustment to the workout. I love that I can get an intense workout done in 30 minutes, or that I can stay a bit longer if I want to work out longer. I even look forward to wrapping my hands and strapping on my gloves each time I work out. It's definitely been the workout program I've stuck the longest.

  • Sam. Sam is the best. He is an excellent trainer, he knows everybody's names, he creates a great atmosphere - there are not many places I like to be at 6am, but 9Round is one of them. I like that I don't have to commit to a scheduled time. The pace is perfect. The more I go, the more I am getting the rhythm of boxing.

  • For the Evanston location - No pressure just motivation from the trainers! Sam and Connor are great at giving tips or alternatives to get the most out of the workout. They are positive and encouraging. The gym seems clean every time I go. I wish the music is a bit louder most days. I feel great when I’m there and the feeling continues throughout the day! This and healthy eating is the key to my weight loss.

  • 9Round trainer
    Leslie "Machine Gun" Matera
    Leslie, born and raised in Evanston, has been passionate about fitness and training her entire life. From designing her own mini workouts for her friends in the park when she was little, to playing high level hockey for 14 years through to the collegiate level, to becoming a certified kickbox fitness trainer at 9Round Evanston. During college, Leslie shifted her training focus to boxing fitness resulting in her obtaining a 34 lb weight loss as well as competing and winning her first boxing match. In the future, Leslie hopes to continue her education to obtain a social work/psychology degree and combine that with her fitness and sports experience to help at-risk youth.

    Sam "The Man" Alicea-Reyes
    Originally from Puerto Rico, Sam grew up a fan of the sport of boxing. His own fitness journey to lose weight and get fit brought him into the world of boxing/kickbox fitness where he lost 45 lbs and eventually trained to compete (and win) in a sanctioned boxing match. Now that he's a trainer at 9Round Evanston, he continues to be a student of the sport, learning new techniques and strategies to improve the training of our members as well as himself. Sam became our 9Round Evanston Manager on January 1, 2018. He was a 9Round Fitness trainer of the year in 2017.

    Erica "Honey Badger" Rodriguez
    Erica started boxing in college as a way to stay fit and de-stress. While balancing her studies at Northwestern, she started competing in amateur matches and tournaments, eventually taking the position as captain of the Northwestern Boxing Team. After college, she continued to leverage her boxing experience to support her work facilitating youth programs in the city. She is USABoxing certified fighter and coach (also a 2016 Chicago Golden Gloves Champion!).

    Conner "Ice" Berg
    Evanston native, Conner “The Ice” Berg is a Kinesiology major and passionate about fitness. Starting very young with a heavy interest in martial arts that inspired his fitness philosophies many years ago. Conner’s passion for martial arts and fitness began at an early age with competitive Taekwondo and Karate training, and led into a pursuing a Kinesiology degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With a degree in the science behind human movement, Conner will make sure to use the most well researched methods in order to ensure that goals are effectively reached. With backgrounds in wrestling and other striking arts, he will certainly make sure people not only get the best workout that they can get, but learn a few tactical skills on the side. Conner became our 9Round Evanston Assistant Manager in charge of the grave yard shift on January 1, 2018

    Chris "Daredevil " DeNardo
    Chris is an Evanstonian resident and newly proud father of baby Ben. He loves to teach and has been training in martial arts for over 15 years, receiving instruction in everything from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Medeival Broadsword. He has recently specialized in boxing/kickboxing/MMA and earned his Personal Training Certification from the Aerobics and Fitness Assoiciation of America.

    Paul "The Professor" Otake
    Paul Otake was born and raised in Chicago and introduced to martial arts at an early age. As a licensed personal trainer and USABoxing coach, Paul is committed to sharing his love of boxing while also helping people achieve their fitness goals. He believes that physical fitness and understanding of martial arts are a life long journey that can improve anyone’s life.

    Christy "Quick" Summers
    Originally from North Carolina, Christy begged her mom to put her in kickboxing classes at a young age after seeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV. As a teenager, she started training in Taekwondo and Krav Maga. Upon moving to Chicago, Christy got a membership at a martial arts school before even landing an apartment. She took a break from Martial Arts for a few years to travel the US and Canada doing animal rights activism. Christy currently maintains a strict training program consisting of Muay Thai, Sanshou, Wrestling, BJJ (Blue Belt), MMA, and even Wushu (a traditional Chinese performance martial art). She currently holds and 1-0 record in MMA, an intense battle in which she was awarded Fight of the Night honors. She practices and learns something new every day and loves applying her skill set at 9Round and helping members achieve their goals.

    Ken "Bonecrusher" Battinus
    Meet the owner/operator trainer of 9Round Evanston. Coach Ken is a seasoned professional, with over 15 years in the fitness industry. He is nationally certified as a personal trainer, licensed professional corner man, USA certified boxing coach, Ironman Triathlete, and amateur boxer. Ken holds two degrees, and is a veteran of the United States Army Airborne who served with distinction as a Non Commissioned Officer (NCO).

    Monique "Downton" Davis
    Monique brings a high level of personal training and specialized fitness expertise to the team. She always raises the energy and enthusiasm level of the gym with her excellent training skills, contagious positive energy, or her impromptu dance moves (when she thinks no one else is looking - we see you Monique!).
