How to Avoid a Summer Workout Rut

How to Avoid a Summer Workout Rut

Four months ago I was more determined than ever to get back into shape. I just had a beautiful baby girl, and I needed to fit into a wedding dress in seven months. If that wasn’t enough motivation to kick start my fitness lifestyle, summer was right around the corner. So, I worked my butt off six days a week (sometimes seven), and I chose to fuel my body with healthy foods. We are now a month into the summer, and I’m starting to notice my motivation gradually slipping away. I’ve also noticed that I’m not the only one in this summer workout rut. The gym is gradually getting less and less crowded each week. The heat seems to be driving people away from reaching their fitness goals. Here are some tips that will help you stay on track as the heat continues to rise on us!

Revisit Your Goal
It’s easy to forget why you are working so hard in the gym, especially if you’re not reminded every day. I still have my goal written down in my planner, but now I also have it on my phone. For the last 10 days, I have been waking up in the morning and opening my notes application on my smart phone. I read my goal daily to remind myself of how important this lifestyle is for myself and for my family. Don’t wait for that edited cover photo of your favorite fitness magazine to remind you that you started a fitness goal.

Make Changes to Your Routine
The last thing I want to do is spend two or three hours in a gym each day during the summer. I think we can all agree that there are other things to do throughout the day that are much more fun. That doesn’t mean you should avoid the gym at all costs. This mindset will only lead to DAYS away from the gym, which can then turn into WEEKS. Try to alter your workout to make it shorter yet still effective. You would be amazed at how 9Round can give you a full body workout in 30 minutes! The first workout is always free, and it can be exactly what you are looking for. Visit www.9Round.com to find a gym near you.

Schedule Your “Off” Days
If you are not used to taking days off from the gym like me, it is truly a MUST. I have learned that it can completely recharge your energy during the summer. If you know you will be busy with pool days, beach trips or spending quality time with the kids, then it will help to plan your days off. This way you will have the free time needed to spend time with your family and the time needed to rest and recover.

Treat Yourself
Relaxing summer days can mean you are finding it easier to indulge in hot dogs, burgers, cold beers, and some delicious ice cream. Indulging in small pleasures every once in a while is satisfying and energizing. With all of the barbecues being hosted every other weekend, it can be hard to say no. Just know your limits and take in small portions. If you allow yourself these little “treat meals,” it can help prevent you from feeling guilty when you decide to stop by the ice cream shop.

Don’t let this summer heat throw you off track. Create a plan that will help keep you focused!
