Stop Wasting Time: Don't Categorize, Make It Materialize!
When it comes to nutrition, all too often, individuals are looking to categorize themselves into some type of nutrition group or category. For example, individuals put themselves into categories such as diet-X, high protein, high fat, no sugar, low sugar, no fat, etc. What we have to keep in mind is that being part of a category does not bring about success, not even close. This is why we don't want to categorize ourselves when it comes to nutrition; rather, we want to make our nutrition materialize.
The definition of ‘materialize’ is this; "to become actual fact; happen." This is what we want; we want the nutrition to become an actual fact and to happen. This means we are following through with the nutrition plan and we are eating right. We are not just simply satisfying our subconscious and claiming that we are part of some nutrition category. Let me give you an example.
Let's use vegetarian as our example. If someone has been a vegetarian for their entire life, that’s great; but if someone thinks that all of a sudden becoming a vegetarian is going to help him or her lose all of that excess body fat they have put on over the years, it's probably not going to happen. Why? Because it's just going to become another diet for this individual and as with all diets, they fail; they are a Disaster Imminent Every Time™. Here's a real-life example.
I was on a business trip a couple of months ago and a driver picked me up from the airport. During our conversation he asked me what I did and when he found out that nutrition and fitness was my business, he proceeded to tell me that he was a vegetarian. He was very strong on his stance about categorizing himself as a vegetarian and did not hold back in bashing non-vegetarians. He went on to claim how healthy it was to be a vegetarian and how unhealthy it was to not be a vegetarian and once again, you could tell he was very happy to categorize himself as a vegetarian (satisfying his subconscious to feel as if he was healthy).
Now that you have some of the background info of our conversation, here is the most interesting part of the story. Not only was this man overweight, he was morbidly obese. At 5'9" tall and 260 pounds, he was obese with a very high amount of abdominal fat. Can you see the huge disconnect here? This individual would rather satisfy his subconscious, place himself in a nutrition category (i.e. vegetarian) and pretend he is doing his body well because he is a ‘vegetarian.’ But at the same time, he is morbidly obese and has all the risk factors for diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease. If this gentleman were truly a vegetarian and living a vegetarian lifestyle (and not just categorizing himself) he would not be morbidly obese.
Do you now see how the title of this blog is now coming to life? Don't categorize, make it materialize! If we are looking for meaningful and sustainable results for a lifetime, categorizing ourselves and satisfying our subconscious doesn't cut it. Rather, we must eat right, follow-through with the plan spot-on and let it materialize.
This gentleman went on to explain why he is so overweight. He said that every weekend he eats a ton of pizza and drinks a ton of beer; hmm, now that's interesting, huh? The same person categorizing himself as a vegetarian, bashing the meat eaters of the world as if they are the most unhealthy individuals on the planet and the same time, this gentleman goes on weekly binge eating sessions of pizza and beer; interesting. And while this individual is playing ostrich, putting his head in the sand, feeling good that he is a vegetarian, at the same time, he has all of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Ask yourself, would you rather categorize…or materialize?
Listen to individuals’ verbiage when it comes to nutrition. For whatever reason, they really want to be part of some category. Let's say the individual starts some fad diet called diet-X. They come out of the gate swinging as if this is the best thing since sliced bread. And then, a few days in, it becomes boring and they start to slide backwards. You would think they would give up categorizing themselves, right? Well, wrong; they still want to still categorize themselves but the category changes slightly. And this is where you start to hear verbiage such as, "I'm still following diet-X, I'm just 70/30 right now." Wait, what? 70/30? Yup, that's right, you heard them correctly. What do they mean by 70/30? What they mean is that they are following diet-X 70% of the time and the other 30% of time, well, not so much. Boy, that sounds like a real winner of a category, huh? Once again, this individual would rather categorize than materialize.
A very wise and successful businessman once said, "you are either all in, or not in it all." Read that one more time, this is a very powerful statement. And this follows through with the whole point about letting your nutrition materialize. Remember the definition of materialize, "to become actual fact; happen." And always remember that great statement, "you are either all in, or not in it all."
If you are looking for results, success and a lifetime of feeling amazing and achieving the body transformation you desire, it’s time to stop categorizing.
