Beating the Winter Blues: 3 tips to boost your mood

Jen Jones

“Carolina Blue” is a term that’s often used to describe the skies here in the Southeast, but during the winter months, much of the country is blanketed in gray and suffers from a lack of sunshine. For many people, the drab conditions and lack of Vitamin D at this time of year bring on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or Seasonal Depression.

If you’re feeling down, find comfort in the fact that you’re not alone and there are ways to combat the side effects of those gray days. In addition to following a treatment plan prescribed by a qualified physician, studies show that exercise, nutrition, and a consistent sleep schedule can all have a positive effect on the mood of those suffering from Seasonal Depression. Below are some tips for beating the blues when skies are gray.

Eat Healthy
You get out of your body what you put into it, and if your eating is tied to your emotions, it’s really easy to make bad food choices. 9Round Nutrition teaches the importance of not only eating healthy, but eating right, which includes meal frequency, nutrient timing, ratio of carbs/protein/fat, and total calories consumed. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can help improve your mood and the way you feel. To make the transition to healthy eating easier, 9Round members receive custom meal plans and recipe ideas.
Pro Tip: Pre-cut veggies, fresh fruits, and nuts are great to have around for a quick, healthy snack that doesn’t require much effort.

Sleep Well
Getting enough sleep on a regular basis is proven to be a huge health benefit. Most studies show that seven to nine hours is optimal for recharging your body and mind, without having the groggy feeling often brought on by getting too much sleep (we know, is there really such a thing?!) To help yourself out in the sleep department, develop a regular sleep routine. Choose a reasonable bedtime and do your best to stick to it; put down the technology – blue light interferes with your body’s clock; and make your bedroom a relaxing, sleep-promoting haven.

Get Active
Exercise is a prescription for feeling good at any time of year, but it’s easy to get out of your regular routine during the busy holiday season and colder winter months. If you’re feeling out of sorts and you’ve neglected your normal workouts, or you didn’t have a fitness routine to begin with, now is a great time to get into the gym. Something as simple as a brisk 30-minute walk outside can lift your mood.
