9Round and Your Ugly Bathing Suit

Drew Brashier

People will come up with every excuse in the world to not workout, especially people who are physically capable of doing whatever they set their mind to. They haven't found their motivation, and sometimes when you can't find it, it gets delivered from the UPS.
A client I have worked with for a few years recently had to take a 6 month break from the gym because of some surgery that she had. Before she had to take the time off, she overcame more obstacles to get into shape than any person I had ever seen. Not only was she in her early 70's, but she had a double knee replacement and a spinal fusion. After all of that, most people would quit before they even started, but not her, she was a fighter.

The first few times I worked with her she couldn't get out of a chair, step up on curbs, or do a lot of things that we all take for granted. Fast forward 2 years and she was getting up and down off the floor with ease, walking 5 and 10k's, and running circles around her grand kids.
When she started working with me again last week, she told me that it was tough to get back in the routine because she knew how long it took her to get where she was, and she didn't know if she could do it again. Then her doorbell rang.

She had ordered a bathing suit a few months back and it finally came in. When she opened it up, it was a gigantic, awful looking suit that made her cringe to look at. "Is this what I'm supposed to wear? That's not going to happen." She found her motivation again.
She clipped that thing on her refrigerator, so that every time she walked by it would give her a reminder of where she wants to be.

When you don't feel like working out, sometimes all it takes is to find your ugly bathing suit.
