It ain’t about liking it-It’s about DiSCIPLINE!

Kevin Hudson

Years ago I was training with some ‘good ole boys’ in a rough part of town. We were finishing up our workout with some ab and neck work, which was normal for our kickboxing training of that time. We knew if we had strong necks and abs we wouldn’t hurt as bad when that body shot slipped through.

As we finished up our neck training, it was hurting pretty bad. One of the guys spoke up and said, “I hate doing these exercises!”

Now I was very fortunate to train with the caliber of people I’ve trained with. I’ve gotten to spar with at least a dozen world champion fighters. One of these top level athletes looked over at the group, spoke up and said, “It ain’t about liking it-It’s about Discipline!”

You know that statement pretty much sums it up for all of us. We don’t always like what’s going on at the time or the situation we are in, but we still have to forge ahead. I know my kids sometimes balk when I make a request that at the time may seem unusual to them. They whine or argue about things that matter, but may not be the most pleasant thing in the world for them.

I think about my buddy in that stinky gym in Greenville, NC, and tell my kids. There are things in life that are not FUN! There are things in life that you don’t want to do. It doesn’t matter whether you like it or not, sometimes it has to be done.

The next time you are sitting on the couch and know you should get to 9round after that long day at work. You know how much better you’ll feel once those 9 intense rounds are done. It’s not about liking getting off the couch or putting that ½ gallon of ice cream back in the fridge.

Am I telling on myself?

So next time you are in the gym. The trainer screams those pleasant words you love to hear, “thirty seconds!” You know the end is in sight so you push that extra little bit, even though you really don’t want to. Remember, those people who can suck it up and endure the tough self-love of self-discipline, will excel!
